On September 4, 2009, the Greek police once again showed their true face. Repression forces (dozens of Delta bikes, MAT and police cars) after arresting a child who was making graffiti on Solonos Street, entered the narrow streets of Exarchia, beating and kicking people, shouting abusive slogans, and screaming uncontrollably, among other things, "we took Exarchia, you idiots". The result was the intimidation of many people who were in the area at the time, the reckless use of tear gas that forced people out of their homes with breathing problems, 4 detainees who were accused of possessing and using explosives even though no molotov cocktails were thrown, many injuries, and of course the serious injury of Nikos Katsaros, who was beaten so badly that his lung was punctured and he almost lost his life. The police's night-time attack could not end without them also "visiting" the self-managed park of Navarinou. They showed up, injuring people, uprooting trees, and like a good mafia gang, they left their signature behind. Written on the door with chalk, "04/09/09 ΕΛ.ΑΣ.". This story, which may still surprise some people, is a daily phenomenon for us, the residents or people who are active in Exarchia. The park has received many visits, each time resulting in some injured person, and arrests of youngsters who, with the same testimonies only from police officers and the same charges, run to the courts to be acquitted most of the time by the judge. Surgical masks are always sold out in the pharmacies of the neighborhood, not because of the fear of the flu virus, but because of the fear of chemicals, tear gas that can even make you throw yourself out of your house in asphyxiation and panic, even if you are sleeping. This story has been going on for years, long before the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, the December uprising that was the driving force for the creation of this space, long before the creation of "Mesologgiou". Whether using police violence or pushing heroin trade in Exarchia Square and the surrounding streets, the state tries to silence the "Exarchians" wanting unsuccessfully to suppress a neighborhood with "concerns", a neighborhood that is on the front line in many social struggles. The park, as an occupied space, could not but be a target for the police, and the occupiers, part of the struggle and defenders of a different way of life and thinking, could not but be guilty in the eyes of the state. Let's show together that we are not afraid of them, that as much as they terrorize us, we will root resistances and that we continue our struggle to get the police forces out of the area.
