Assembly Bill No. 249 requires the State Plan for Medicaid and all health insurance plans to provide certain benefits relating to contraception, including coverage for contraceptive drugs, devices, and services without copay, coinsurance, or higher deductible. The bill aligns Nevada law with federal law, mandating coverage for FDA-approved contraceptive methods, including up to a 12-month supply of contraceptive drugs, insertion and removal of contraceptive devices, education, counseling, and voluntary sterilization for women. Insurers can require a higher deductible or copayment for a contraceptive drug if the insured refuses a therapeutic equivalent, but must provide at least one contraceptive drug or device with no deductible or copayment. The bill also requires a process for exemptions from medical management techniques and coverage for therapeutic equivalent drugs deemed medically inappropriate by a healthcare provider.
