New data technologies are driving consolidation, and the high levels of concentration in the agri-food sector are reinforcing the industrial food and farming model, exacerbating social and environmental fallout. Consolidation has made farmers reliant on a handful of suppliers and buyers, squeezing their incomes and eroding their autonomy. The scope of research and innovation has narrowed, and commitments to sustainability are being eroded. Dominant firms have become too big to feed humanity sustainably, and steps are needed to redefine anti-competitive practices and realign incentives in food systems.
