Das Akademienprogramm der deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften dient der langfristig angelegten geisteswissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung und wird mit jährlich etwa 62,9 Millionen Euro gefördert. Die zentrale Aufgabe besteht in der Erschließung, Sicherung und Vergegenwärtigung der kulturellen Überlieferung. Jede Wissenschaftlerin und jeder Wissenschaftler in Deutschland kann sich bei einer der aufgeführten Akademien mit einem Forschungsvorhaben bewerben, das den Kriterien des Akademienprogramms entspricht. Die Bewerbung erfolgt in Form eines kurzen Vorantrags, der die Projektidee und die Notwendigkeit seiner langfristigen Verfolgung erkennen lassen muss. Die Akademie prüft den Vorantrag und die Möglichkeit der Übernahme in ihre wissenschaftliche und organisatorische Betreuung. Die Autoren der in die engere Wahl gekommenen Voranträge werden gebeten, einen ausführlichen Antrag zu stellen, der durch nationale und internationale Fachgutachter bewertet wird. Der Letzte Termin für die Einreichung eines Vorantrags für 2018 war der 31. Januar 2016.
