Summary

This Bill amends the Workers’ Compensation Act to provide for a presumption in respect of certain diseases that occur more frequently among firefighters than other workers or the general population, including cardiac arrest, multiple myeloma, primary leukemia, and various types of cancer. The presumption that the disease arose out of the firefighter’s employment and occurred during the course of that employment is broadened for firefighters, with the regulation-making authority authorized to prescribe the minimum period of employment for the presumption to arise for each specific listed disease. Additionally, the Minister is permitted to appoint the chairperson of the Governance Council to a term not exceeding three years, with the option to reappoint for up to six years of consecutive service.
