Summary

Amnesty International's report "This is what we die for" exposes human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) artisanal cobalt mining sector, which powers the global trade in cobalt. The DRC is the source of over half of the world's cobalt, with 20% coming from artisanal miners. Approximately 110,000 to 150,000 artisanal miners, including children as young as seven, work in hazardous conditions, digging and washing cobalt ore by hand. The report highlights the failure of the DRC government to protect people from human rights abuses and the lack of due diligence by multinational companies, including electronics companies, in tracing the origin of cobalt in their products.
