Summary

COVID-19 has increased the risk of violence against women and girls (VAWG) due to disruptions in support services, mobility restrictions, and economic insecurity. A big data analysis in eight Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore) found trends in online searches and social media posts related to VAWG. The analysis identified increased discussions about violence against women, particularly migrant women, and a focus on physical and sexual violence. Help-seeking behavior also increased, with searches for services and support. The study used 20,551,620 unique searches and 3,502 keywords to analyze trends before and after the pandemic's peak. The findings provide proxy information on VAWG trends during the COVID-19 crisis, highlighting the need for targeted support services and response organizations to promote content about VAWG and related services.
