Summary

This methodology, III.Y, is for methane avoidance through separation of solids from wastewater or manure treatment systems. It applies to small-scale CDM project activities that remove solids from wastewater or manure streams to reduce methane production. The project activity does not recover and combust biogas. The separated solids must be further treated, used, or disposed of in a way that results in lower methane emissions. The dry matter content of the separated solids must remain above 20% until final disposal or use. The methodology includes specific conditions for animal manure management systems and wastewater treatment systems. The project boundary includes the site where the waste would have been collected, stored, and treated, as well as the site where the solids are separated, stored, and used or disposed of. The baseline scenario is the situation where the solids are treated in the wastewater treatment or manure management system without methane recovery, resulting in methane emissions to the atmosphere.
