Summary

Richard M. Mullane, a retired USAF Colonel and former NASA astronaut, was born on September 10, 1945, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1967 and the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1975. Mullane completed 150 combat missions in Vietnam and later became a flight test weapon system operator. He was selected by NASA in 1978 and flew on three space missions: STS-41D, STS-27, and STS-36, logging 356 hours in space. After retiring from NASA and the USAF in 1990, Mullane became a professional speaker and writer, and published his first novel, "Red Sky, A Novel of Love, Space, & War", in 1993.
