Summary

The School District of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey, vests primary responsibility for administration in a Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent has a seat on the Board of Education, can speak at meetings, but has no vote. The Board seeks the best-qualified candidate, using recruitment procedures including a written job description, informative materials, and an interview process. The Superintendent must possess a valid New Jersey administrative certificate and qualify for employment after a criminal history record check. An employment contract is required, reviewed and approved by the Executive County Superintendent, and approved by the Board with a recorded roll call majority vote. The contract includes a term of 3-5 years, salary, benefits, and evaluation process. The Superintendent can be dismissed or reduced in compensation only for just cause. At the conclusion of the contract term, the Superintendent is deemed reappointed unless the Board notifies them in writing that they will not be reappointed.
