Summary

The School District of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey, recognizes depression and suicide as serious public health problems. The Board of Education has a legal and ethical responsibility to respond to suicidal thinking and behavior, and directs each school to develop a Crisis Response Team to assess, intervene, and provide post-intervention support for students exhibiting suicidal behavior. The team will include administrators, counselors, psychologists, and social workers, and will develop a plan to support students, staff, and families in the event of a suicide. The district will also provide training for teachers on suicide prevention, including warning signs, referral procedures, and prevention measures, and will maintain a list of resources on the website for additional support.
