Summary

The Belgian Act on Euthanasia of May 28, 2002, defines euthanasia as intentionally terminating life by someone other than the person concerned, at the latter's request. To perform euthanasia, a physician must ensure the patient is an adult or emancipated minor, legally competent, and conscious when making the request. The request must be voluntary, well-considered, and repeated, with no external pressure. The patient must be in a medically futile condition with constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated. The physician must inform the patient about their health condition, discuss alternatives, and consult another physician. The patient's request must be in writing, and they may revoke it at any time. The Act also allows for advance directives, which must be drafted in writing, dated, and signed by the patient or a designated person, and witnessed by two people.
