Summary

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the last newsletter of this half term. Children return to school after the half term break on Tuesday 6 June, after our staff training day on the Monday. There are 7 weeks left of this academic year, and we plan to make the most of them. The coming half term is incredibly busy, as we prepare to say goodbye to our Year 6 leavers and make sure everyone else is ready for next term; there are screening checks in phonics and multiplication tables, reports, parents’ evenings, Sports Week, trips and visits and so much more.

The so much more begins with Year 6’s intensive swimming tuition – 3 hours per week for 4 weeks in the pool at the Saint Thomas the Apostle College – to make sure that as many children as possible leave Brunswick able to swim a minimum of 25 metres and perform self-rescue; essential skills that in the future could save their lives.

Warm thanks go to the BPFA for hosting such a successful International Day on 23 May, that raised £500 for the school. Brunswick is proud to represent a wealth of countries and cultures, and for our children to have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate them. Our children are citizens of the world, so should understand as much as possible about it.

Finally, our fabulous parent governor Sarah Naughton’s term of office is coming to an end, so we begin the search for another parent governor to replace her on the Board. Sarah’s financial knowledge and expertise – as well as her level-headed and pragmatic approach to the role – have been extremely beneficial to the school. If being a parent governor interests you, there are details below of what the role entails, and of what you need to do to register your interest.

I wish you a peaceful and enjoyable half term break with your children and families, and look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday 6 June.

Do you want to become a Parent Governor?
The Term of Office of one of our Parent Governors comes to an end in July, so soon there will be a vacancy on the Governing Body of Brunswick Park Primary School.

What does a school governor do?
Governors are responsible for overseeing the management side of a school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They enable their school to run as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children.

Being a school governor is a commitment to attending governing body meetings which consider issues such as setting the school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. They are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the head teacher and senior leaders.

Governors bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to the governing board and schools benefit greatly from working with skilled volunteers, for example anyone with experience of finance, law, premises management or human resources. For example, a governor with business know-how can transform the running of a school.

The organisation 'Governors for Schools' has more information about school governance, on governorsforschools.org.uk/volunteer/apply

There is also information about our current Governing Body on the school website.

Brunswick Park's Governing Body meets monthly in term time at 6pm. Meetings typically last 2 hours. In addition, governors visit the school during the day to see it in operation, and report back to the board. If you would like to put yourself forward to be a parent governor, you need to be a parent of a child/children who currently attend Brunswick Park Primary School.

Please give your name and your child's class to Eden St Claire in the School Office by Friday 6 May 2022 at 4pm. If more than one name is received, there will be an election in which all the school's parents and carers can vote.

Thanks to all who organised, cooked, danced, sang, paraded and ate.
It was wonderful to see the whole world represented in our school, and an important reminder of the richness of our diversity that educates us, broadens our minds, helps us to understand people and culture and be respectful, empathetic and tolerant.
