Summary

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved the addition of nine non-Canadian Chinese-language services to the lists of eligible satellite services for distribution on a digital basis. The services, known as the "Chinese Great Wall TV Package", include CCTV-4, The Satellite Channel of Southern Television Guandong, Southeast TV Station, Jiangsu International TV Channel, Beijing TV, CCTV Entertainment Channel, Dragon TV, China Yellow River Television Station, and Hunan Satellite TV. The CRTC found that one of the services, CCTV-4, had aired abusive comments in the past, but due to the age of the stories and lack of evidence of similar content currently being aired, the Commission did not conclude that the service was typical of content currently being broadcast. The CRTC expects CCTV-4 to comply with Canadian broadcasting codes and not air abusive comments when distributed in Canada.
