Summary

The Group of Twenty (G20) plays a vital role in promoting the climate agenda, and some of its members have implemented carbon pricing through carbon tax or emissions trading systems (ETS) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Six G20 countries (Japan, South Africa, Argentina, France, Ireland, and Mexico) have implemented carbon tax, while Singapore is the only Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member to have done so, with Indonesia planning to implement a carbon tax policy in 2025. The energy sector is the highest contributor to GHG emissions in most member states, and the size of sectoral coverage by emissions price impacts the level of revenues generated from carbon tax. Carbon tax revenues vary in their contribution to total government revenue, with France and Ireland's carbon tax revenue contributing 0.71% and 0.53%, respectively. Revenue recycling methods also differ, with Japan and Singapore using their carbon tax revenues to support GHG emission mitigation. Carbon tax prices per ton of CO2e vary, with France and Ireland having the highest prices at USD 52.4 and USD 39.3, respectively.
