The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and Universities South Africa (USAf) annually award scholars for outstanding contributions to social sciences and humanities. The 2023 HSRC/USAf CEOs' Awards focus on "Social Justice" and aim to recognize innovative research projects analyzing social justice inquiry, theories, and practice. The awards will recognize scholars who approach social justice issues with rigorous conceptualization and meaningful engagement with peers and affected communities.

The awards have four categories:
1. Established Researcher: recognizes a lifetime of achievement and excellence in research, with a record of sustained academic excellence, international reputation, and contribution to social justice scholarship.
2. Mid-Career Researcher: requires a record of sustained academic excellence of at least 10 years, international reputation, and contribution to social justice scholarship.
3. Emerging Researcher: requires a record of sustained academic excellence of at least 5 years, developing international reputation, and contribution to social justice scholarship, with nominees under 35.
4. Research Team: recognizes teams that demonstrate contribution to social justice scholarship, diversity, and inclusion, with a record of sustained academic excellence and international reputation.

Previous winners include Professor Deevia Bhana, Dr. Witness Maluleke, and research teams from the University of Johannesburg. The nomination process involves self-nomination or nomination by deputy vice-chancellors for research, with applications considered from universities, science councils, and other bodies under the USAf umbrella. The awards process includes a call for nominations, adjudication, and shortlisting to determine awardees. The closing date for submissions is February 24, 2023.
