Summary

The WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger in Brazil and the African Union partnered to promote home-grown school feeding across Africa. From 2012 to 2014, the Centre hosted African delegations and organized events to foster discussions on school feeding and its linkages to rural development. In 2015, a high-level delegation visited Brazil to learn about its Zero Hunger Strategy and home-grown school feeding programme. The African Union subsequently included home-grown school feeding in its Continental Education Strategy, promoted a formal resolution seeking member states' commitment, and produced evidence to advocate for such programmes. The AU approved the Continental Education Strategy for Africa 2016-2025, which aims to set up a qualitative system of education and training, and identified home-grown school feeding as a valuable opportunity to advance education and local economies. The African Day of School Feeding was established, and a Multidisciplinary Committee of African Experts on School Feeding was set up to facilitate implementation. The Pan-African School Feeding Network was established in 2016, and a study on sustainable school feeding across the African Union was conducted to provide policy-relevant knowledge and recommendations for advancing the Continental Education Strategy's objectives.
