Summary

The Government of West Bengal has decided to provide reservation to Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs) in admission to higher educational institutions in the state, with a maximum limit of 10% of total seats in each category. The reservation norms will apply to state educational institutions, including universities, government colleges, and aided colleges, but not to minority educational institutions. The provision of reservations will be in accordance with the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019, and will be subject to certain conditions, including increasing the number of seats over and above the annual permitted strength and creating physical and academic infrastructure to cater to the increase in seats. The reservation will be implemented in two years, and the extent of reservation will be limited for the first academic session to ensure that the number of seats available for SC/ST/OBC categories is not reduced.
