Summary

The Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance in Seattle protects public health, creates productive workplaces, and builds economic security by allowing employees to take paid time off for illness, injury, or health conditions, as well as for certain safe time reasons. All employees in Seattle, including full-time, part-time, temporary, exempt, and non-exempt employees, are entitled to paid sick and safe time. The amount of paid sick and safe time earned depends on the number of hours worked and the size of the employer's business. Employees can use their accrued paid sick and safe time for various reasons, including caring for themselves or a family member, going to the doctor, or when their place of business or child's school has been closed by a public official for health reasons. Employers must provide employees with their paid sick and safe time balance on each paystub or through an online payroll system. Employees are not required to share the reason for using paid sick and safe time, but employers may ask for documentation after three consecutive workdays of paid sick and safe time.
