Summary

The NHS is implementing phase 3 of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on urgent actions to address inequalities in NHS provision and outcomes. Eight actions are required:

1. Protect the most vulnerable from COVID-19 through enhanced analysis and community engagement.
2. Restore NHS services inclusively, with core performance monitoring of service use and outcomes among deprived neighborhoods and Black and Asian communities.
3. Develop digitally enabled care pathways to increase inclusion.
4. Accelerate preventative programmes to engage those at greatest risk of poor health outcomes.
5. Support those who suffer mental ill health with more robust data collection and monitoring.
6. Strengthen leadership and accountability with a named executive board member responsible for tackling inequalities.
7. Ensure datasets are complete and timely to underpin an understanding of and response to inequalities.
8. Collaborate locally in planning and delivering action to address health inequalities.

These actions aim to reduce health inequalities, particularly for those disproportionately affected by COVID-19, including people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities, older people, and those with long-term health conditions.
