In urgent and emergency care, Accident and Emergency (A&E) attendances increased by 6.6% in April 2019 compared to April 2018, with 2.11 million attendances. Emergency admissions rose by 6.3% to 535,138. The number of patients seen within 4 hours was 1.80 million, an increase of 2.5% from April 2018. However, 314,123 patients waited over 4 hours, a 38.5% increase from April 2018.

NHS 111 calls offered in April 2019 totaled 1.3 million, with an average of 46,000 calls per day. The proportion of abandoned calls decreased to 2.3% from 3.3% in April 2018.

Ambulance services responded to 678,220 incidents in April 2019, with mean response times of 7 minutes and 1 second for Category C1 and 21 minutes and 13 seconds for Category C2, both missing their respective standards.

Delayed transfers of care decreased by 10.1% to 138,831 delayed days in March 2019, with 61.9% of delays attributed to the NHS.

In planned care, 1.4 million patients started consultant-led treatment in March 2019, with 16.4 million completed referral to treatment (RTT) pathways in the 12 months to March 2019. The waiting list increased by 5.9% to 4.2 million, with 86.7% of patients waiting less than 18 weeks, missing the 92% standard.
