Summary

The Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) program is Washington state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training program, providing education, employment, and training services to Basic Food recipients. BFET serves individuals not participating in the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Refugee Cash Assistance programs, with activities including job search training, educational services, and vocational education. The program operates in 35 of 39 counties in Washington state, serving 81,262 participants over the past five Federal Fiscal Years. Characteristics of people served by BFET include a majority of females (67.5%), with the largest age group being 25-34 years old (36.6%). The program is funded through three methods: 100% grant funding, 50/50 reimbursement funding, and 75/25 reimbursement funding for tribal programs. BFET started as a pilot in Seattle in 2005 and has since expanded statewide, with over 50 community-based organizations, 12 Employment Security WorkSource locations, and all 34 community and technical colleges offering services.
