Summary

The public's concerns about terrorism have surged and positive ratings of the government's handling of terrorism have plummeted following the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, with 46% of Americans saying the government is doing well in reducing the threat of terrorism, the lowest point in the post-9/11 era. Approval of Obama's handling of terrorism has also declined, with 37% approving and 57% disapproving. The share of Americans citing terrorism, national security, or ISIS as the most important problem facing the country has increased to 29%, and 83% regard ISIS as a major threat to the US. There has been little change in views of the relationship between Islam and violence, with 46% saying Islam is more likely to encourage violence and 45% saying it is not. A partisan divide exists, with 68% of Republicans and 30% of Democrats saying Islam encourages violence more than other religions. The Republican Party has a sizable advantage over the Democrats on terrorism, with 46% saying the GOP can do better in dealing with the terrorist threat at home.
