Arizona Youth Soccer has a Head Injury/Concussion Policy, effective 2013/14 season, which includes:
informed consent from parents and athletes, removal from play if a concussion is suspected, written clearance from a licensed Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) to return to play, and completion of a "Concussion Return to Play Form".
Team/club officials, referees, parents/guardians, and athletes have specific responsibilities, including immediate removal from play, notification, and submission of forms.
Licensed health care providers authorized to clear athletes to return to play include Medical Doctors (MD) and Doctors of Osteopathy (DO).
Signs and symptoms of concussion include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and confusion, and athletes should be removed from play immediately if suspected of having a concussion.
Continuing to play with a concussion can lead to prolonged recovery, severe brain swelling, or even fatal consequences.
Athletes must receive medical clearance before returning to play, and the "Concussion Return to Play Form" must be completed and submitted.
