Summary

The experimental Consumer Price Index for elderly Americans (CPI-E) rose 126.5% from December 1982 to December 2007, compared to 115.2% for the CPI-U and 110.0% for the CPI-W, due to higher prices for medical care and shelter, which are weighted more heavily in the CPI-E. The CPI-E had average annual increases of 3.3%, compared to 3.1% for the CPI-U and 3.0% for the CPI-W. The difference in inflation rates is largely due to the higher share of expenditures on medical care and shelter by older Americans.
