Summary

Every article of foreign origin entering the US must be marked with the English name of the country of origin, unless an exception is provided. The marking must be legible, conspicuous, and permanent, and indicate the country where the article was made. The ultimate purchaser must be informed of the country of origin. Altering an article in a second country may change its country of origin if a substantial transformation occurs. Marking requirements include size, location, and permanence, and acceptable forms include branding, stenciling, and labeling. Certain products, such as clothing and tobacco, have additional labeling requirements.
