Summary

The COVID-19 lockdown in Louisiana led to a 47% decrease in traffic accidents, including a 46% decrease in accidents involving injury, 43% decrease in accidents involving distracted drivers, and 41% decrease in accidents requiring an ambulance. The lockdown also changed the composition of accidents, with more incidents involving individuals aged 25-64, males, and nonwhite drivers. Despite lower traffic, there was no impact on ambulance response time. Mobility in Louisiana decreased across all categories, with a large increase in time spent in residential locations. The reduction in car accidents is estimated to have resulted in a $21 billion national and $289.6 million state reduction in car crash externalities.
