Summary

The Alliance for Safety and Justice conducted the first-ever national survey of crime victims' views on safety and justice, finding that victims prefer rehabilitation over punishment and investments in crime prevention and treatment over prison spending. Key findings include: one in four people have been a victim of crime in the past 10 years, with low-income, young, and people of color being more likely to be victims; two out of three victims did not receive help after the incident; and victims overwhelmingly prefer investments in schools, education, job creation, mental health treatment, and drug treatment over prison spending. Victims also prefer holding people accountable through options beyond prison, such as rehabilitation and community supervision.
