Summary

BMJ requires declaration of interests to ensure independence and integrity of content, products, and services. Interests to be declared include personal financial interests, organisational financial interests, non-financial interests, and interests of related parties. Declarations are required before taking up work for BMJ, and staff and advisory board members must review their declarations annually. Disclosure is usually sufficient, but conflicting interests may disqualify individuals from working with BMJ. Failure to declare conflicts of interest may result in retraction of content, termination of contracts or employment, and future exclusion from working with BMJ. Declarations are required from staff, board members, editors, advisory board members, consultants, contractors, freelancers, authors, series editors, and peer reviewers.
