Summary

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) honored four press freedom activists with its 2007 Democracy Award, recognizing their courageous efforts to preserve press freedom in Egypt, Russia, Venezuela, and Southeast Asia. The awardees were Hisham Kassem, a prominent Egyptian publisher and democracy activist; Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) - Venezuela, a press freedom monitoring group; Kavi Chongkittavorn, a Thai journalist and campaigner for press freedom; and Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist who was murdered in 2006. The awards ceremony was preceded by a panel discussion on the importance of a free press in establishing a democratic society. NED also donated its founding papers to the Library of Congress, marking the 25th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan's Westminster Address, which led to the founding of NED.
