Summary

Informal sector employment plays a limited role in poverty reduction in South Africa, with government transfers and formal sector jobs being the dominant drivers of aggregate poverty reduction. However, on a per-job basis, the poverty reduction associated with formal sector jobs and informal sector jobs is similar, with the poverty reduction associated with one informal sector job being between 50 to 100 per cent of the poverty reduction associated with one formal sector job. The informal sector constitutes about 17 per cent of total employment in South Africa, with most workers being self-employed, and is concentrated in the wholesale, retail, and trade sector, services, and construction. Despite its importance as a livelihood source for many workers, the informal sector is vulnerable and often ignored in policy documents.
