Ms Hilal Elver, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, spoke at the Technical Dialogue on 10 Years of the Implementation of the Right to Food Guidelines. She expressed appreciation for FAO's work on food security and acknowledged the importance of considering interconnected issues like human rights, women's rights, and climate change. Elver emphasized the need to focus on vulnerable populations, particularly women, and to address the plight of over 1 billion people living on less than a dollar a day. She highlighted the role of international law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, in promoting the right to food. Elver also discussed the significance of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food and the work of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. She emphasized that combating hunger and malnutrition is a moral responsibility and a legal obligation, and outlined her priorities as Special Rapporteur, which include building on the work of her predecessors and developing new initiatives to address the right to food.
