Summary

Almost half of refugees in Dzaleka camp are aged 25-34, a productive group that could contribute to Malawi's labor workforce. 14% of refugees intend to take up formal employment, while 22% want to start a business, with 49% having access to capital from overseas friends and family, and 45% using personal savings. 71% of refugees have experience in formal or informal business practices. 36% of refugees do not want to leave the camp, and those with higher education are less interested in settling in Malawi. Poor living conditions are the main motivation for wanting to leave the camp, with 48% of refugees citing this reason. The study recommends improving living conditions in the camp, speeding up the Refugee Status Determination process, and considering the integration of refugees into Malawian society, which could benefit the economy and create local jobs.
