Durham University's Divest-Invest campaign began in Spring 2015, with the demand to divest from all fossil fuels, specifically those held with Sarasin and Partners. The campaign was led by the student group People & Planet, with support from the Students' Union. The university established a Divestment Commission in 2016, which included student and academic representatives, to explore the possibility of divestment. After a consultation with students, staff, and alumni, the commission recommended divestment, which was approved by the university's executive committee, Senate, and Ethics Committee. In March 2018, the university made a public commitment to divest from all fossil fuels and become a major international partner in the development of green energy. The campaign used tactics such as setting up the commission, getting support from student unions, and taking a professional approach to constructive conversations with the university. The student group and Students' Union worked together, with the SU providing support and guidance on navigating the university's bureaucracy.
