Summary

The European Space Agency's (ESA) participation in the International Space Station (ISS) program has generated significant socio-economic impacts. The program has a multiplier effect of 1.8, with estimated value added of EUR 14.6 billion over 1995-2016, compared to ESA funding of EUR 8 billion. The program has also created 209,518 person-years of employment, with an employment multiplier of 1.9, and generated EUR 7 billion in government revenues. Additionally, the program has had catalytic and wider impacts, including progresses in space technology, fundamental and applied research, inspiration, and strategic/international cooperation. Stakeholder feedback indicates a positive effect on new hires, internal processes, international exposure, and new engagements, with an enabled revenues multiplier of 2.20. The program has also formed solid interagency relationships and proven Europe's value as a viable partner.
