Summary

The School Code is amended by changing Section 21-14, which concerns the registration and renewal of teacher certificates. Certificates are renewable upon meeting requirements, and elementary supervisory certificates require a master's degree or 8 semester hours of credit in educational administration and supervision. Lapsed certificates may be reinstated upon payment of back fees and a penalty or completion of coursework. Teaching certificates issued before February 15, 2000, are exchanged for Standard Teaching Certificates upon renewal. Initial Teaching Certificates are valid for 4 years and renewable every 4 years until 4 years of teaching are completed. Standard Teaching Certificates are renewable every 5 years based on proof of continuing professional development. The State Board of Education and State Teacher Certification Board establish procedures for renewing Standard Teaching Certificates, including standards, timelines, and approval of providers.
