The Financial Inclusion Global Initiative (FIGI) is a three-year program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support country-led reform actions for national financial inclusion targets and the global 'Universal Financial Access 2020' goal. The FIGI Working Group on Electronic Payments Acceptance aims to foster effective practices for enabling and encouraging acceptance and use of electronic payments, with an emphasis on person-to-business payments and unserved and underserved groups. Wide acceptance of non-cash payments is a pre-condition to uptake and effective usage of transaction accounts, but acceptance of electronic payments remains limited among merchants, with only 37% of worldwide P2B payments to medium, small, and micro retailers made electronically.
