## USCIS Form I-9 Summary (Effective 10/21/2019)

Purpose: This form is used to verify the employment eligibility of individuals in the United States. Employers must complete it for all new hires and certain continuing employees.

Key Components:

Section 1: Employee Information & Attestation (Employee Completes)

Personal details (name, date of birth, address, contact information)
Employment authorization status (U.S. Citizen, Noncitizen National, Lawful Permanent Resident, Alien Authorized to Work)
One acceptable document from List A, or a combination of one from List B and one from List C, to establish both identity and employment eligibility. Acceptable Documents:
U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)
Foreign passport with temporary I-551 stamp or notation
Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766) with photo
Compact of Free Association status documents
Driver's license, school ID card, military ID, etc. (for minors unable to provide a document from List A)
Signature and date attesting to the accuracy of the information provided.

Section 2: Employer or Authorized Representative Review & Verification (Employer Completes)

Review and verify the employee's documents within 3 business days of employment start.
Physically examine one document from List A, or a combination of one from List B and one from List C.
Document details (title, issuing authority, number, expiration date) for each examined document.
Signature and date attesting to the employee's authorized to work in the U.S. based on the presented documents.

Section 3: Reverification & Rehires (Employer Completes)

For continuing employment, verify that the employee’s authorization to work has not expired.
Document details if applicable for any updated or renewed authorization.
* Signature and date confirming continued employment eligibility.

Anti-Discrimination Notice: Employers cannot specify which documents an employee may present and cannot refuse to hire or continue employment based on a document's future expiration date.
