The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) welcomes the EU's new agenda for the Mediterranean, which focuses on five policy areas: human development, good governance and the rule of law; resilience, prosperity and the digital transition; peace and security; migration and mobility; and green transition. The EESC applauds the commitment to the rule of law, human and fundamental rights, equality, democracy, and good governance, and emphasizes the importance of involving civil society and social partners in shaping and monitoring EU cooperation. The committee also stresses the need to tackle the root causes of migration, promote gender equality, and ensure a decent life and employment prospects for people in their own countries. The EU's new Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) will provide up to EUR 7 billion for the implementation of the new agenda between 2021 and 2027, which could leverage up to EUR 30 billion in public and private investment in the region over the next decade.
