The WTO Ministerial Conference adopted a declaration on sanitary and phytosanitary measures, recognizing the importance of the SPS Agreement in protecting human, animal, and plant life or health while facilitating international trade. The declaration acknowledges emerging challenges such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, and zoonoses, and instructs the SPS Committee to enhance the implementation of the SPS Agreement through a work programme to address these challenges and support global food security, sustainable food systems, and safe international trade. The work programme will explore themes such as basing SPS measures on scientific evidence, adapting SPS measures to regional conditions, and increasing participation of developing and least developed country members.
