Summary

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has accepted a notification for the use of Antimicrobial Copper Alloys - Group I (EPA Reg. No. 82012-1) in various indoor non-food use sites. The alloys, which contain 96.2% copper and 3.8% other ingredients, are intended for the manufacture and fabrication of touch surface components in hospitals, healthcare facilities, laboratories, and public, commercial, and residential buildings.

The acceptable use sites include:

Healthcare facilities: bedrails, footboards, over-bed tables, handrails, door push plates, sinks, faucets, and other equipment
Public and commercial buildings: shopping cart handles, cash registers, ATM machines, gym equipment, and elevator handrails
* Residential buildings: door handles, kitchen surfaces, countertops, and other touch surfaces

The alloys are not approved for direct food contact or food packaging uses. The EPA has made the submitted information a part of the registrant's file, and a stamped label can be obtained by submitting an amendment request.
