Summary

The Child Safety Forward Initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, aimed to reduce child abuse and neglect fatalities and injuries through a collaborative, community-based approach. The Hartford project area had higher child maltreatment rates than the state and national averages. The project focused on parent and community organizing, combining research, community organizing, and prevention education. The Parent Engagement Work Group, composed of eight parents, identified cultural strengths and protective factors, including communal identity, closeness within families, and values of sharing and generosity. The project sought to learn about risks for child maltreatment, cultural strengths, and parent and community responses to educational materials. The initiative brought together a multidisciplinary team of stakeholders, including state agencies, community-based organizations, and parents, to share data, coordinate services, and seek best practice recommendations.
