This section outlines space acquisition policies for Federal agencies under two types of delegations: categorical and special purpose.

Categorical Space Delegations (§ 102–73.145):

- Authorize agencies to acquire specific types of space listed in § 102–73.155, including:
- Communication facilities (antennas, repeaters)
- Depots and stockpiling areas
- Docks, piers, and mooring facilities
- Fumigation areas
- Garages (fiscal year leases only)
- Greenhouses
- Airport operating facilities
- Hospitals and medical clinics
- Temporary housing (not including quarters for temporary duty travel or relocation)
- Laundries
- Quarantine facilities
- Ranger stations
- Recruiting space for the armed forces (5-year lease terms)
- Schools related to agency functions
- Specialized storage/depot facilities (e.g., cold storage, self-storage units)
- Space for short-term uses like conferences and emergencies

Special Purpose Space Delegations (§ 102–73.160):

- Allow specific agencies to lease their own special purpose space, listed in §§ 102–73.170 through 102–73.225, for up to 20 years.
- Limitations on rental amounts, lease terms, and parking spaces apply (as detailed in §§ 102–73.230 through 102–73.240).
- Agencies authorized include the Department of Agriculture, with delegated authority to lease specific types of special purpose space outlined in § 102–73.170.
