Summary

Purdue Pharma conducted an extensive campaign to market and promote OxyContin, using an expanded sales force to encourage physicians to prescribe it for moderate-to-severe noncancer pain. OxyContin prescriptions grew rapidly, and by 2003, nearly half of all prescribers were primary care physicians. Several factors may have contributed to OxyContin abuse and diversion, including its potency, labeling, and increased availability. Federal and state agencies, and Purdue, have taken actions to address the issue, including FDA approving a stronger safety warning and collaborating with Purdue on a risk management plan. DEA has established a national action plan, and state agencies have investigated reports of abuse and diversion.
