Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of political leadership in addressing the crisis. A study analyzed the speeches of 20 heads of government from around the world, revealing differences in how men and women leaders discuss the pandemic. Five primary themes emerged: economics and financial relief, social welfare and vulnerable populations, nationalism, responsibility and paternalism, and emotional appeals. While all leaders acknowledged the economic impact, women leaders spoke more frequently about individual-level effects and a wider range of social welfare services, including mental health and domestic violence. Men leaders used war metaphors and aggressive language more frequently. The study provides insight into the rhetorical tools and language used by different leaders during a national and international crisis, highlighting the importance of language in shaping public trust and adherence to public health measures. The findings suggest that women leaders tend to focus on individual-level effects and social welfare services, while men leaders rely more on war metaphors and aggressive language. The study's results have implications for understanding the differences in political leaders' messages and priorities, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
