Summary

The EU and US have structured global relations around the liberal flow of trade and capital, and the restriction of migration, but the current spike in disorderly migration is challenging this order. Emerging powers and migrants are using migration to challenge and change the global system, with some countries using migration as a threat to extract concessions from wealthy neighbors. The traditional Western idea that democratization and human rights are enough to protect minorities in multi-ethnic states is being questioned, and the concept of nationhood and territoriality is being weakened. The push and pull dynamics of migration have changed dramatically since 2008, with ambitious regional powers propelling migrants to challenge the liberal order, and diaspora networks playing a key role in pull zones.
