Global Terrorism Index 2015.pdf

The Institute for Economics and Peace's Global Terrorism Index 2015 report analyzes trends in terrorism since 2000, covering 162 countries. Key findings include:
- An 80% increase in terrorism-related deaths in 2014, with 32,685 deaths, a nine-fold increase since 2000.
- Terrorism is concentrated in five countries: Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria, accounting for 78% of deaths in 2014.
- The number of countries with over 500 deaths increased from five to 11, with six new countries added: Somalia, Ukraine, Yemen, Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Cameroon.
- 67 countries experienced at least one death from terrorism in 2014, including OECD countries like Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, and France.
- Boko Haram became the most deadly terrorist group in the world, with a 300% increase in fatalities in Nigeria.
- There was an 11% decrease in deaths of religious figures and worshipers, offset by a 172% increase in deaths of private citizens.
- Only 0.5% of terrorism-related deaths occurred in Western countries since 2000, with 70% of deaths in the West attributed to lone wolf attacks, mostly driven by right-wing extremism, nationalism, and supremacism.
- An estimated 25,000-30,000 foreign fighters from 100 countries have arrived in Iraq and Syria since 2011, with Europe accounting for 21% of foreign fighters.
- State-based conflicts and terrorism have led to massive refugee flows, with 10 of the 11 countries with high terrorism levels also having high refugee and IDP migration.
