Summary

Grant De Patie, a 24-year-old gas station attendant, was killed in 2005 by a stolen vehicle during a gas-and-dash incident. His death led to the implementation of "Grant's Law" in 2008, which required pay-before-pump, better safety protocols for late-night workers, and other measures. However, in 2012, some protections were watered down, replacing requirements like two staff on night shifts or a physical barrier with measures focusing on keeping money and products safe. Grant's family and the BC Federation of Labour continue to advocate for the adoption and reinstatement of Grant's Law to keep young workers safe.
