Summary

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 require employers to control hazardous substances at work to prevent ill health. Thousands of workers are made ill by hazardous substances each year, contracting diseases such as asthma, cancer, and skin disease. Employers must take effective measures to control exposure and protect health, which can also improve production and cut waste. Hazardous substances can include dusty or fume-laden air, metalworking fluids, flowers, bulbs, fruit, and vegetables, as well as products like paint, ink, glue, and detergent. Employers must assess the risk to their employees and take steps to prevent or control exposure, including finding out the dangers of substances used, thinking about the task and how workers might be exposed, and using safety data sheets to understand health risks and emergency situations.
