Summary

The Ministry for the Environment has published interim guidance for voluntary climate change mitigation in New Zealand, replacing previous guidance that expired on 31 December 2021. The guidance encourages organisations and individuals to undertake voluntary climate change mitigation and outlines best practice for making credible claims. To be considered credible, voluntary climate change mitigation must be transparent, real, measurable, and verified, and must meet six principles: transparency, real and measurable, additional, not double used, address leakage, and permanent. Organisations should first measure their emissions, commit to an emissions reduction plan, and take action to reduce their emissions before claiming voluntary climate change mitigation. The guidance is intended to enable and encourage voluntary climate action and will be reviewed and updated to reflect evolving international best practices.
